Legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick’s first game in charge of the North Carolina Tar Heels ended in disaster as his team was thrashed 48-14 by Texas Christian University on Monday.

The loss, watched by sports icons including Michael Jordan, was the second-worst defeat of Belichick’s 30-year head coaching career and the most points ever conceded by one of his teams.

Belichick, 73, had overhauled the UNC roster with 70 new players but drew criticism for starting South Alabama transfer Gio Lopez at quarterback. Lopez struggled before being replaced by veteran Max Johnson, who managed a late touchdown but couldn’t prevent the blowout.

After the game, Belichick admitted:

«We need to do a better job all the way around — coaching, playing, all three phases of the game.»

The Tar Heels will look to bounce back on Saturday when they face Charlotte.
