Fabio Cannavaro’s appointment as Uzbekistan’s new head coach has sparked a flurry of reactions among football supporters. Many were surprised by the announcement, though the chance to guide a nation heading to its first World Cup proved too tempting for the Italian legend to turn down.

«Big move for Uzbekistan. Cannavaro stepping in shows real ambition ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The 2006 Ballon d’Or winner bringing his experience could be massive for their project,» one fan posted on X.

Another wrote:

Others were more playful, with one user noting:

«Probably the only footballer ever who will be able to say they won the Ballon d’Or and ended up managing Uzbekistan.» A third simply added: «Legend, hope he succeeds.»

Not all reactions were positive.

«I see Uzbekistan finish last in their World Cup group stage. They don’t have the talent and it’s a waste of time for Cannavaro. He should be coaching a top team in Italy or in the Premier League,» commented another.

Cannavaro’s Career

Cannavaro’s managerial career has so far fallen short of his playing reputation. His recent stint at Dinamo Zagreb ended after just 14 games, continuing a pattern of mixed spells in Europe and Asia. Yet he boasts a 53.41% win rate across 264 matches, with successes including a Chinese League One title with Tianjin Quanjian in 2016 and two separate stints at Guangzhou Evergrande. He has also coached Saudi side Al Nassr, the Chinese national team, and Italian clubs Benevento and Udinese.

With Uzbekistan preparing for its World Cup debut, Cannavaro’s wealth of international experience could prove vital, even if opinions remain divided on his suitability for the role.

Kursiv also reports that Cannavaro is close to being named head coach of the Uzbekistan national football team with a salary package of €3.5–4 mln a year.
