Cristiano Ronaldo is «not stopping before reaching a thousand goals» and Lionel Messi can join him there, according to former Netherlands star Wesley Sneijder.

Sneijder, who left Real Madrid the summer Ronaldo arrived in 2009, noted the 40-year-old’s longevity after tallying 450 goals for Los Blancos and surpassing 950 overall across Sporting, Manchester United, Juventus and Portugal (143 for the national team). Ronaldo has publicly set four figures as his retirement target.

Messi, meanwhile, shows no sign of slowing in the United States. The Inter Miami captain captured the 2025 MLS Golden Boot, fired his club into a Conference semi-final and has 42 goals this season, taking his career total beyond 900. With a contract in South Florida through at least 2028, Sneijder believes the Argentine can also reach 1,000.

Dismissing the perennial GOAT debate, Sneijder said comparing Messi and Ronaldo is «a stupid argument» given their different styles, adding he splits his vote «50–50.»

Looking ahead to the 2026 World Cup in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, Sneijder tipped Portugal among the favourites, giving Ronaldo a «stronger chance» than holders Argentina, though both icons are expected to feature if selected.

Silverstone, who spent three years at St James’ Park after a previous spell with Arsenal, is departing on good terms.
