South Korea Mourns Former Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan

Former South Korean prime minister Lee Hae-chan, a long-time political heavyweight and key figure in the country’s democratic evolution, has died while on an official trip to Vietnam, authorities in both countries said.
Lee was 73. He died on January 25 in Ho Chi Minh City after suffering a heart attack, despite receiving emergency medical treatment, according to a South Korean presidential advisory body.
President Lee Jae Myung paid tribute, describing him as a defining figure in South Korea’s democratic history.
«He dedicated his life to protecting and growing democratic values through our turbulent modern history,» the president said.
Lee served as prime minister from 2004 to 2006 and was elected to parliament seven times. His political career began as a student activist, and he was imprisoned in the 1970s for leading pro-democracy movements under authoritarian rule.
Known for his confrontational style and sharp political instincts, Lee frequently clashed with rivals but was widely regarded as a skilled strategist. He played a central role in helping four liberal presidents, including the current leader, secure election victories.
The conservative opposition People Power Party said his death marked the end of a significant chapter in South Korea’s political life.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and other senior officials extended condolences to South Korea and Lee’s family. Vietnam’s foreign ministry said it coordinated with local authorities to provide medical assistance, but his condition proved critical.
Lee arrived in Vietnam on January 22 to attend a meeting of the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council, a civilian-led body that advises Seoul on policy towards North Korea. He served as the council’s head, overseeing members based in South Korea and overseas.
