Uzbekistan plans to begin development of four uranium deposits in 2026, officials told President Shavkat Mirziyoyev during a meeting on industry development held on February 2.

Last year, the country produced about 7,000 tonnes of uranium, while identified reserves reached 139,000 tonnes. The meeting also addressed the state of Uzbekistan’s coal industry. By early February this year, coal output totalled 9 mln tonnes, up by 590,000 tonnes year on year. Production is expected to rise to 11 mln tonnes during the next autumn and winter season.

To achieve this target, authorities plan to accelerate the development of coal deposits in the capital region and southern areas with support from private investors. Private sector involvement could add a further 2.5 mln tonnes to total output.

Particular attention was given to the Nishbosh coal deposit in Angren. Investment in the project is estimated at nearly $500 mln, with coal reserves of around 233 mln tonnes. Mining is scheduled to begin in 2026 with initial output of 1 mln tonnes, before gradually increasing to 10 mln tonnes per year.

The government also plans to establish production of polymer-based materials using coal processing. The value of this project is estimated at $5 bn.
