The family of actor James Van Der Beek has received an outpouring of support following his death at the age of 48.
Van Der Beek, best known for starring in Dawson’s Creek, died on February 11 after a battle with colorectal cancer. In the days after the news broke, friends set up a GoFundMe account to help his wife Kimberly Van Der Beek and their six children.
By February 12, the campaign had raised $1 mln, surpassing the original target of $250,000. The goal was later increased to $1.3 mln. The fundraising page explained that the family faced financial strain due to medical costs and the extended fight against cancer. Donations are intended to cover living expenses, bills and the children’s education, helping the family maintain stability during a difficult time.
Van Der Beek and Kimberly had six children: Olivia, 15, Joshua, 13, Annabel, 12, Emilia, 9, Gwendolyn, 7, and Jeremiah, 4.
Last year, Van Der Beek had begun selling Dawson’s Creek memorabilia through Propstore to offset treatment costs. He also sold jerseys from the film Varsity Blues, using the proceeds to support both his own medical needs and other families facing similar challenges.
The fundraising success highlights the community’s desire to support the family and honour Van Der Beek’s legacy, ensuring his children are cared for in the wake of his passing.
