BYD is reportedly in discussions to enter Formula 1 and compete with teams such as Ferrari and McLaren, Bloomberg reports.

The Chinese EV and battery producer aims to raise global brand awareness as it expands international sales. BYD stopped producing internal combustion engine-only cars in March 2022, focusing solely on battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

If BYD joins F1, it would follow recent newcomers such as GM-backed Cadillac, which debuted on March 8. F1 cars have used hybrid drivetrains for over a decade, and the 2026 regulations have increased the role of electric power, making F1 approximately 50% EV. The MGU-K now delivers up to 350 kW to the rear wheels, nearly three times the previous 120 kW, paired with a 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 engine.

BYD could use technology from its high-end Yangwang range for F1. Launched in January 2023, Yangwang’s U9 model uses the e⁴ platform with four independent electric motors producing roughly 960 kW (1,287 hp), accelerating 0–100 km/h in 2.3 seconds, while the Extreme version delivers 3,000 hp. It is not clear whether BYD would enter as the 12th team or acquire an existing team, with reports naming Alpine as a possibility.

BYD is also reportedly considering the World Endurance Championship. Other Chinese brands are expanding into motorsport, with Chery eyeing Le Mans and Nio competing in Formula E for over a decade.
