Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet has been cast as the female lead in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, sources told Deadline, though her exact role has not been revealed.
Andy Serkis and Peter Jackson spent much of last year persuading Winslet to join the production, which will be filmed in New Zealand from late May to October. Winslet is familiar with the country, having previously worked there on Jackson’s 1994 film Heavenly Creatures.
She joins returning stars Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, and Serkis as Gollum, reprising their roles from Jackson’s original The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
The film’s story, set between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, follows Aragorn’s quest to capture Gollum before he reveals the Ring’s location to Sauron. Much of the plot is drawn from J.R.R. Tolkien’s footnotes.
Serkis directs the Warner Bros production, which is written by Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, with Jackson, Boyens, Walsh and Zane Weiner producing.
Winslet is also likely to return for a second season of the HBO series Mare of Easttown, with discussions ongoing to shoot in Pennsylvania in 2027.
