Chelsea have cast their recent domestic woes aside to secure a spot in next month’s FA Cup final following a 1-0 victory over Leeds United at Wembley on Sunday, Reuters reports.

The decisive moment arrived in the 23rd minute when controversial Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez found space between defenders to head in a pinpoint cross from Portuguese winger Pedro Neto.

Putting turmoil behind them

The match-winner’s crucial contribution comes just weeks after he was suspended by the club’s hierarchy and former manager Liam Rosenior. Fernandez had sparked frustration with a recent press interview in which he hinted at being unsettled in London and seeking a transfer to Spain.

His suspension coincided with a disastrous run of five consecutive Premier League defeats for the London side. Chelsea’s recent weeks have been defined by poor form, dressing room unrest and sudden managerial upheaval.

Widespread reports of player dissatisfaction with the inexperienced Rosenior, who only took the reins in January, culminated in his dismissal last Wednesday. American ownership group BlueCo sacked the coach following a dismal 3-0 thrashing by Brighton & Hove Albion leaving assistant Calum McFarlane in caretaker charge until the end of the campaign.

A game of two halves

Under McFarlane’s interim guidance, the eight-time FA Cup winners looked revitalised from the first whistle. They dominated the opening 45 minutes and displayed impressive defensive resilience after the break.

Leeds boss Daniel Farke tweaked his system and introduced substitutes to inject some much-needed urgency into his side during the second half. However, the Yorkshire outfit, who have spent the majority of the season battling Premier League relegation, failed to convert their renewed energy into an equaliser.

Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was instrumental in preserving the narrow lead, producing excellent saves in both halves to deny Brenden Aaronson and Anton Stach.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the final whistle, Sanchez praised the squad’s character:

«It’s amazing. The boys reacted in the way they should have. We’ve tried to keep everyone positive in training and it’s the chance to be in another final.»

The Showpiece Finale

Chelsea will now face Manchester City in the showpiece event on May 16. Pep Guardiola‘s side booked their ticket with a 2-1 win against Southampton on Saturday and remain firmly in the hunt for the Premier League title having already lifted the League Cup this season.
