Marsch Praises “Good Opponent” Uzbekistan Ahead of Canada’s World Cup Warm-Up

Canadian men’s national team manager Jesse Marsch has highlighted Uzbekistan as a vital test for his squad as they prepare for their final World Cup warm-up matches, Canadian Soccer Daily reports.
Following a demanding training camp in Charlotte designed to build fitness in the heat, the newly announced 26-man Canadian roster is heading back north. Their immediate focus is the June 1 clash with Uzbekistan in Edmonton, a match Marsch believes will provide the perfect competitive edge.
Speaking to TSN’s Luke Wileman after Friday’s squad reveal, Marsch expressed his respect for the visiting Central Asian team.
«I think we’ll have a good opponent in Uzbekistan,» he noted, clearly expecting a robust challenge to prepare his players for the global stage.
Goalkeeping auditions against the Uzbeks
The fixture against the Uzbek squad will also serve as a direct audition for Canada’s unresolved goalkeeping position. Neither Maxime Crepeau nor Dayne St. Clair has firmly claimed the starting role for the tournament opener against Bosnia.
To evaluate his options under match conditions, Marsch is using the Uzbekistan game as a proving ground. He confirmed that the two keepers will split the match down the middle with a pre-planned substitution at half-time.
Beyond the tactical and personnel evaluations, Marsch is thrilled to bring international football back to the Canadian fans and anticipates a fantastic reception for both teams.
«We’re excited to see people in Edmonton,» Marsch said. Acknowledging the passionate local support, he confidently added: «I think that stadium will be full.»
After testing themselves against Uzbekistan, Canada will travel to Montreal for one final preparatory match against the Republic of Ireland before their World Cup campaign officially begins.
