Despite suffering a defeat against Canada in their recent international friendly, Uzbekistan head coach Fabio Cannavaro expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance during the opening 45 minutes.

The Italian manager emphasised the importance of learning from the encounter as the squad prepares for crucial competitive fixtures.

«In any match there are mistakes. It is better to make them in friendly fixtures than in official games in ten days’ time,» Cannavaro stated.

Analysing the match dynamics, the head coach highlighted a stark contrast between the two periods of play. During the first half, Cannavaro noted that his players operated with impressive compactness and aggression.

However, a tactical shift after the interval proved costly. The team’s attempt to dominate possession led to a noticeable drop in overall intensity and resulted in several unforced errors.

Since taking the reins, Cannavaro has been vocal about his primary developmental objectives for the national side:

  • Increasing the overall speed of play
  • Matching the rigorous physical demands of modern international football

Praise for the Hosts and Fans

The World Cup winner was quick to commend his opponents. Having monitored the Canadian national setup for several years, he acknowledged their significant recent growth and the abundance of talent within their current squad.

Addressing the challenging match conditions, Cannavaro pointed out that the freezing weather tested his players severely. He also took the time to express his gratitude to the dedicated supporters who braved the harsh climate to back the team from the stands.

Regarding squad fitness, the manager reassured fans that there are currently no major injury concerns, though further medical updates are expected in the coming days.

Historic World Cup on the horizon

Looking past the friendly defeat, attention is rapidly turning towards Uzbekistan’s impending debut at the FIFA World Cup. Drawn into a highly competitive group, they are scheduled to face Portugal, Colombia and Congo.

Cannavaro remains fiercely optimistic and wants his squad to embrace the unprecedented opportunity on the global stage.

«This is the first World Cup in the history of our country. We have nothing to lose,» he concluded. «I tell the players only one thing — enjoy this moment.»
