Iran’s armed forces have once again shut down all maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, severely disrupting one of the world’s most critical energy choke points.

According to a statement published by the state-linked Tasnim News agency, the restriction applies unconditionally to all sea traffic.

«The Strait of Hormuz is declared closed to the movement of any vessels, including oil tankers and commercial ships, and any movement will be restricted,» the military command announced.

Escalation triggered by helicopter crash

The latest flare-up in hostilities between Washington and Tehran was ignited by the downing of an American AH-64 Apache attack helicopter near the strait. U.S. President Donald Trump immediately laid the blame on Iran, triggering a swift military response.

Tehran later attempted to de-escalate the situation by informing intermediaries that the destruction of the aircraft was entirely accidental and not a planned hostile action.

However, the clarification failed to prevent a military confrontation. The U.S. armed forces launched a series of targeted airstrikes against positions inside Iran. Tehran immediately retaliated by firing missiles at American military installations in the region, including the Al-Harir airbase located in Iraqi Kurdistan.

A familiar geopolitical lever

This blockade is part of an ongoing pattern of maritime disruptions orchestrated by the Islamic Republic this year. In mid-April Tehran halted all shipping through the strategic waterway, citing a profound lack of trust in the United States and various Middle Eastern nations.

The strategy aligns with directives from Iran’s leadership. In March the country’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, publicly stated that closing the strait serves as a primary lever of geopolitical pressure for the nation.

The indefinite closure is expected to cause immediate volatility in global energy markets, as international shipping firms scramble to reroute tankers away from the volatile Gulf region.
