South Korea Pull Off Dramatic Comeback to Defeat Czech Republic 2-1

South Korea mounted a spirited second-half comeback to defeat the Czech Republic 2-1 in a tense 2026 World Cup group stage clash. The Asian side secured all three points after scoring a decisive goal with less than ten minutes remaining on the clock.
The first 45 minutes ended entirely goalless despite South Korea firmly dictating the tempo and maintaining possession. Attacking duo Son Heung-min and Lee Kang-in both managed to carve out dangerous opportunities but were repeatedly thwarted by a highly resolute performance from Czech goalkeeper Matej Kovar.
Czechs strike against the run of play
Following the interval the European side managed to break the deadlock in unexpected fashion. In the 59th minute a long throw-in caused confusion in the South Korean penalty area. Ladislav Krejci reacted quickest to the loose ball and directed a powerful header straight into the near top corner.
Remarkably this was the Czech Republic’s first genuine attacking threat of the second half.
Rapid South Korean response
The European advantage proved to be incredibly short-lived. Just nine minutes after falling behind the Koreans found their equaliser.
Lee Kang-in delivered a perfectly weighted through ball to completely unlock the defence. Hwang In-beom expertly collected the pass, feinted past his marker and executed a sublime chip over the advancing keeper to level the scoreline at 1-1.
Following the equaliser South Korea ramped up the pressure and continually bombarded the opposition’s defensive third. The Czech Republic briefly thought they had reclaimed the lead during a rare counter-attack but Tomas Soucek saw his effort correctly ruled out for offside.
The decisive moment of the match arrived in the 81st minute. Hwang In-beom turned provider as he burst down the flank and drilled a low cross across the face of the goal. Oh Hyeon-gyu threw himself at the delivery and guided a brilliant diving finish just under the crossbar.
Match summary:
- 59′ Ladislav Krejci (Czech Republic)
- 68′ Hwang In-beom (South Korea)
- 81′ Oh Hyeon-gyu (South Korea)
The Czech Republic threw bodies forward in the dying moments in a desperate search for a second goal but the South Korean defence stood firm to safely see out the victory.
