President Donald Trump announced on Friday that American armed forces successfully eliminated Hector Rusthenford Guerrero Flores, the fugitive leader of the Venezuelan prison gang Tren de Aragua. The gang boss was more widely known across Latin America by his criminal alias, «Nino Guerrero».

Taking to his Truth Social platform on Friday evening, Trump revealed that he personally ordered the United States Southern Command to deliver a «swift and lethal kinetic strike» against the cartel leader. The president described Tren de Aragua as one of the most bloodthirsty terrorist organisations on the planet and noted that the successful mission relied on close cooperation with authorities in Venezuela.

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth subsequently took to X to confirm that the lethal operation occurred earlier in the week and that Guerrero had definitively been killed in the strike.

Joint intelligence and high-tech support

The Venezuelan information ministry swiftly corroborated the American reports. Officials in Caracas confirmed that Guerrero was neutralised during a raid that triggered intense armed clashes with criminal factions.

According to the ministry, the operation was a triumph of bilateral cooperation. The successful targeting of the gang leader was made possible through extensive intelligence sharing and specialised technological support provided jointly by both nations.

Guerrero had been a highly sought-after fugitive since 2023. He famously managed to break out of Venezuela’s notorious Tocoron prison alongside several other high-ranking gang members just moments before a massive police raid on the facility.

A transnational criminal empire

The U.S. State Department currently designates Tren de Aragua as a foreign terrorist organisation. Over recent years the Trump administration has repeatedly targeted Guerrero and his top lieutenants with severe economic sanctions to disrupt a vast criminal empire built on illicit drug smuggling, human trafficking and money laundering.

The syndicate holds a terrifying grip over key migration routes, exploiting vulnerable individuals travelling south towards relatively prosperous nations like Chile or heading further afield to Europe. Regional police forces report that the gang’s illicit activities stretch from Panama down through the Andean corridor to Brazil.

Their criminal enterprise encompasses a wide array of violent activities, including:

  • Widespread extortion and kidnapping
  • Contract killings
  • Organised retail theft and smuggling networks
  • Cross-border human trafficking

Political ramifications and deportations

The assassination of Guerrero comes amid intense domestic political manoeuvring regarding U.S. border security and immigration. President Trump has frequently claimed that Tren de Aragua actively coordinates its illicit American operations with the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

The U.S. administration has repeatedly cited this alleged geopolitical connection to justify its hardline border policies. Most notably, officials have used the gang’s presence as justification for deporting certain migrants currently residing in the United States directly to a maximum-security prison facility in El Salvador.
