Putin Accuses NATO of Preparing for War with Russia

Moscow says it will strengthen its military as tensions with the Western alliance continue to rise

Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused NATO of preparing for a possible military confrontation with Russia, warning that tensions between Moscow and the Western alliance are continuing to rise.

Speaking to graduates of Russian military academies, Putin claimed NATO countries were increasing military spending, expanding weapons production and strengthening forces near Russia’s borders. He said Moscow would respond by reinforcing its own army and modernising its weapons systems.

The remarks come as NATO members continue to increase defence support for Ukraine and discuss long-term security guarantees for Europe. Western officials have repeatedly argued that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has made higher defence spending necessary, while Moscow says the alliance’s actions are proof of hostile intentions.

Putin also warned that the risk of direct confrontation could grow in the coming years if NATO continues its current course. His comments follow similar statements from senior Russian officials, who have accused the West of turning Ukraine into a staging ground against Russia.

NATO has rejected claims that it is preparing to attack Russia, insisting that its military buildup is defensive and aimed at deterring further aggression. The alliance says support for Ukraine will continue as Kyiv resists Russia’s ongoing invasion.
