The upcoming film adaptation of Elden Ring is expected to cost nearly $200mn, making it the most expensive production in the history of independent film studio A24, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The reported budget is almost three times that of A24’s previous record-holder, Marty Supreme, which cost approximately $70mn. It also marks a significant increase from earlier estimates that placed the adaptation’s budget at more than $100mn.
The Wall Street Journal cited people familiar with the project, although A24 has not publicly confirmed the figure. The reported production cost does not include marketing expenses.
British filmmaker Alex Garland is writing and directing the adaptation. His previous work includes Ex Machina, Civil War and the screenplay for 28 Years Later.
The cast includes Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, Nick Offerman, Tom Burke and Havana Rose Liu. Jonathan Pryce, Sonoya Mizuno and Peter Serafinowicz are also attached to the project.
Filming began in the United Kingdom in April 2026 and concluded in July. The film is scheduled to premiere in cinemas and IMAX on 3 March 2028.
Why A24 is spending so much on Elden Ring
The reported budget represents a major departure for A24, which built its reputation producing and distributing relatively low-cost independent films.
Garland’s Civil War, released in 2024, previously ranked among the studio’s most expensive productions with a budget of approximately $50mn.
At nearly $200mn, Elden Ring would move A24 into the spending range of major Hollywood franchises, reflecting the scale of the fantasy world being adapted.
The film is based on FromSoftware‘s critically acclaimed action role-playing game, released in February 2022. Its mythology was developed with the involvement of Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin, who is also producing the adaptation.
Set in a fantasy realm known as the Lands Between, the game follows a character called the Tarnished on a journey to restore the shattered Elden Ring and claim the title of Elden Lord.
The original game has sold more than 36mn copies worldwide and won Game of the Year at The Game Awards in 2022.
Despite the confirmed cast, A24 has yet to reveal which characters the actors will portray or provide a detailed synopsis of the adaptation.
