Samsung is reportedly preparing to reintroduce an under-display selfie camera in its Galaxy Z Fold 9, potentially giving the 2027 foldable flagship an uninterrupted inner screen without a visible camera cutout.

The information comes from technology insider kro_roe, who shared details about the upcoming smartphone on X. According to the leaker, Samsung plans substantial internal upgrades while retaining a design similar to its current foldable models.

The Galaxy Z Fold 9 could measure just 3.9 mm when unfolded and 7.9 mm when folded, making it thinner than its predecessor.

The company first introduced an under-display camera with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in 2021. The technology allowed the front-facing camera to sit beneath the display, removing the conventional hole-punch cutout.

Samsung continued using the design through the Galaxy Z Fold 6 before switching back to a visible camera opening with the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

The change was widely attributed to limitations in image quality, as the display layer above the camera reduced the amount of light reaching its sensor.

Samsung’s 2026 foldable models, including the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and the wider Galaxy Z Fold 8, also feature conventional selfie camera cutouts.

Could Apple’s iPhone Duo influence Samsung’s next foldable?

The possible return of the hidden camera follows Apple’s entry into the foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo, released in October 2026.

Apple’s first foldable handset features an under-display camera on its inner screen, allowing users to view content without a visible camera opening.

The technology could put additional pressure on Samsung to reconsider its approach, although there is no confirmation that Apple’s design influenced the reported Galaxy Z Fold 9 plans.
