A 20-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at the California home of Sam Altman, authorities said.

According to the FBI, suspect Daniel Moreno-Gama was captured on surveillance footage hurling the incendiary device at Altman’s property, setting a gate on fire. Less than an hour later, he allegedly travelled to the headquarters of OpenAI and threatened to burn down the building.

Investigators said the attack was premeditated, with the suspect reportedly motivated by opposition to artificial intelligence and fears it could lead to human extinction.

Security staff at the company’s offices told police the suspect made threats to «burn it down and kill anyone inside.» Authorities later recovered incendiary materials, including kerosene and a lighter, during his arrest in San Francisco.

No injuries were reported. Prosecutors said the case may be treated as domestic terrorism, and Moreno-Gama could face life in prison if convicted.

In a public response, Altman acknowledged concerns about AI but called for de-escalation, urging that debates over the technology should not lead to violence.
