Uzbekistan’s chess sensation Javokhir Sindarov has returned to a hero’s welcome in Tashkent after a triumphant performance at the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament. Following his historic victory, the 20-year-old grandmaster was awarded the prestigious «Mehnat shuhrati» (Glory of Labour) order.

Upon landing at the capital’s airport, Sindarov was greeted by a high-profile delegation that included Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov, officials from the Uzbekistan Chess Federation, coaches and his close relatives.

A presidential tribute

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev formally presented the state honour to the young champion while congratulating him on becoming the first player from Uzbekistan to secure first place at such an elite level of competition.

During the ceremony, the head of state emphasised that such monumental success is a source of immense national pride. He noted that the achievement is the result of years of relentless effort, strict discipline and the unwavering support of his inner circle.

«Of course, no result comes on its own,» President Mirziyoyev stated. «Behind this lies many years of tireless work, experience accumulated since childhood, a strong will, iron discipline as well as the school of mentors and the prayers of his family.»

He took the opportunity to express his deep gratitude to the grandparents, parents and trainers who raised such a worthy representative of the Uzbek people.

An unprecedented undefeated run

Sindarov’s path to the Candidates title was nothing short of spectacular. He demonstrated remarkable stability and confidence throughout the event to finish with ten points out of 14 games without suffering a single defeat. This record stands as one of the best statistical performances in the history of the legendary tournament.

The Uzbek star managed to clinch the competition with a round to spare. A crucial draw against his main rival Anish Giri in the decisive stage was enough to mathematically guarantee his overall triumph before the final day of play.

The battle for the crown

By winning the Candidates Tournament, Javokhir Sindarov has earned the ultimate right to challenge the reigning World Chess Champion. In late 2026, he will sit across the board from 19-year-old Dommaraju Gukesh of India in a highly anticipated match for the world crown.

Looking ahead to the colossal clash, Sindarov remains focused and optimistic. «I have a very good team, I have everything I need to work, so I will try to work hard and use my chances,» he remarked regarding his upcoming preparation.

Despite his young age, Javokhir Sindarov already boasts a phenomenal chess pedigree. He famously earned his grandmaster title at just 12 years old. He subsequently helped the national team win the 2022 Chess Olympiad and made history again in 2025 by becoming the youngest World Cup winner on record.
