The UK and France are leading a new international «Coalition of the Willing» aimed at safeguarding shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions with Iran and divisions with the United States complicate efforts to stabilise the region.

Following a meeting of 51 countries, French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stressed that freedom of navigation must be protected, amid reports that Tehran is demanding steep tolls for vessels passing through the strait.

Despite U.S. President Donald Trump declaring the crisis resolved, Iran signalled the situation remains unstable, citing ongoing restrictions on its shipping. The strait is a critical chokepoint for global trade, with around 20% of the world’s energy supplies passing through it.

European leaders say more than a dozen countries have offered military and logistical support for a potential mission, which could include minesweeping operations and naval escorts for commercial vessels. The plan also seeks broader participation from countries in Asia, including India, Japan and South Korea.

However, disagreements persist over the role of the United States, with France favouring a more autonomous European approach while others argue US involvement remains essential due to its military capabilities.

Analysts warn that while a multinational presence could deter further escalation, questions remain over how the coalition would respond if Iran attempts to close the strait again, highlighting the risks facing one of the world’s most vital maritime routes.
