Louisiana Gunman Shot Dead After Murdering Eight Children
Law enforcement in the American state of Louisiana have shot and killed a man following a devastating domestic rampage that claimed the lives of eight youths, BBC reports.
The perpetrator, named by authorities as Shamar Elkins, went on a shooting spree in the city of Shreveport early on Sunday morning. He murdered seven of his own offspring alongside an unrelated juvenile in what police have characterised as a severe domestic disturbance.
According to official reports, the youngsters who died were between one and 14 years of age.
A morning of terror
The violence began at approximately 05:00 local time (10:00 GMT). Police department spokesperson Chris Bordelon explained that Elkins initially wounded a female pedestrian before storming a nearby property. It was inside this residence that the fatal massacre of the children took place.
In total, the lone gunman fired at 10 individuals during his rampage. While the death toll is exceptionally high, several victims survived the ordeal:
- Two adult females remain in critical care, with one confirmed to be the mother of the deceased youngsters.
- A ninth child managed to escape the carnage by leaping from the property’s roof and is currently receiving medical treatment.
A further survivor sprinted to a neighbouring house to successfully raise the alarm.
Following the bloodshed, Elkins hijacked a motor vehicle to make his getaway. Officers gave chase into the adjacent district of Bossier Parish where a final confrontation ensued. Police confirmed that they neutralised the attacker during this engagement.
Community in mourning
The sheer scale of the tragedy has prompted widespread shock across the nation. Data from the Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit group classifying a mass shooting as an event resulting in at least four victims suffering gunshot wounds, confirms this as the most lethal American firearms incident since eight people were killed in Illinois in January 2024.
Local leaders struggled to comprehend the horror. Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux called it the most distressing crisis his city has ever witnessed, noting that the intense grief affects everyone from the bereaved relatives to the attending police officers and coroner staff.
Police Chief Wayne Smith echoed these sentiments, stating his heartbreak for the community while confirming that an extensive investigation is underway alongside state detectives.
Shreveport Councilman Grayson Boucher highlighted the grim reality of local domestic violence. He pointed out that such disputes usually account for roughly a third of all regional crimes and homicides, but this single atrocity has immediately doubled the city’s murder rate for the year.
The devastation has drawn condolences from the highest levels of state government. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry spoke of his deep heartbreak and expressed immense gratitude for the tireless efforts of the emergency services.
U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson also offered his profound sorrow for the local community, ensuring that the victims and their loved ones remain in his thoughts as the city navigates this incredibly difficult period.
