Fact-checkers have dismissed a viral claim that Donald Trump attempted to launch a nuclear strike on Iran, calling the allegation unsubstantiated and unsupported by any credible evidence.

The rumour originated from a podcast appearance by retired CIA analyst Larry Johnson, who alleged that Trump was stopped by General Dan Caine. However, independent fact-checking organisations found no official records, media reports, or Pentagon briefings confirming such an incident.

No evidence to support claim

Investigations by fact-checkers concluded that the allegation relies entirely on a single, unnamed source and lacks documentary proof. Neither the White House, the Pentagon, nor representatives for Caine have publicly addressed the claim.

Despite this, the story spread rapidly online after being amplified by political commentators, gaining millions of views across social media platforms within hours.

Viral spread fuelled by tensions

The claim gained traction amid ongoing tensions between Trump and military leadership over Iran policy. While disagreements have been documented, analysts say this context made it easier for unverified narratives to resonate with audiences already sceptical of official accounts.

Political pressure intensifies

The controversy comes as political pressure on Trump continues to mount. More than 50 members of Congress have expressed support for measures related to the Twenty-fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which allows for the removal of a president deemed unfit for office.

Among the most vocal critics is Jamie Raskin, who warned that the United States faces a «dangerous precipice» and called for congressional action, citing concerns over national security and public trust.

Misinformation risks remain high

Experts warn that the episode highlights how quickly unverified claims can spread, particularly when tied to high-stakes geopolitical issues. In the absence of confirmed evidence, fact-checkers stress the importance of relying on verified sources and official statements.
