Uzbekistan Sets 12 Mln Tourist Target for 2026 With Focus on Karakalpakstan

Uzbekistan has set its sights on welcoming approximately 12 mln foreign tourists by the close of 2026.
As part of this sweeping nationwide strategy, the government aims to direct up to 500,000 of these international visitors to the autonomous republic of Karakalpakstan. The national Tourism Committee confirmed these ambitious targets in a recent statement provided to Kursiv Uzbekistan.
The country’s travel sector is already experiencing substantial early momentum. Between January and March of this year, Uzbekistan recorded 2.8 mln foreign tourist arrivals. This represents a robust surge of 770,000 individuals when compared to the same first-quarter period last year.
According to the department, boosting the profile of Karakalpakstan as a premier travel destination is a top priority for the current calendar year. To support this initiative, the region is preparing to host the «Mizdahkan — A Sacred and Mysterious Place» festival. This marquee event is designed to bring together a vibrant mix of cultural exhibitions and regional gastronomic celebrations.
The autonomous republic will also serve as a vital hub for industry dialogue, hosting an international conference titled «Raising Cultural Awareness and Developing Ecologically Sustainable Tourism», which kicks off tomorrow and runs from April 23 to 25.
Further showcases of regional heritage are planned across local municipalities. The Karateren ethno-tourism complex in the Takhtakupyr district will host a national culinary competition alongside a live concert programme.
Meanwhile, the Khojayli district is set to stage a dedicated exhibition of traditional national costumes and a series of dynamic cultural performances.
