HoYoverse has offered players a highly anticipated glimpse into the frozen lands of Snezhnaya during the recent «To Snezhnaya and the Future» behind-the-scenes broadcast.

The Cryo nation serves as the stronghold of the Fatui and the headquarters of the Adventurers’ Guild. As the final destination in the Teyvat chapter before diving into the unknown, it represents the very forefront of the struggle against fate and the Heavenly Principles.

Lore and the Tsaritsa’s grand design

The developers revealed that Snezhnaya currently possesses six of the seven Gnoses, lacking only the elusive Pyro Gnosis. Interestingly, many Archons seemingly handed over their divine items at a very small cost, heavily implying that the Tsaritsa’s overarching rebellion might actually be the better choice for Teyvat as a whole.

The region is also home to a mysterious fae race whose lineage ties back to the ancient kingdom of Hyperborea. The rise and fall of this ancient civilisation are deeply intertwined with the Descenders, angels and the Heavenly Principles, promising massive lore drops for dedicated fans.

A frozen, industrial wonderland

Snezhnaya’s design draws heavy inspiration from Eastern Europe and regions near the Arctic Circle. It embraces an industrial «Snowland» aesthetic reminiscent of grim survival works like Snowpiercer or the Metro series.

A major feature of this permafrost landscape will be fully functional trains. Rather than acting purely as transport, these multi-carriage vehicles will serve as vital cultural spaces like camps or makeshift theatres. Implementing these trains presented complex geometric, physical and co-op synchronisation challenges for the technical team, ensuring they interact dynamically with the open world.

Evolving combat and mechanics

Enemy behaviour is getting a massive overhaul to reflect the nation’s lore. Aligning with their militarised nature, Fatui forces in Snezhnaya will fight with tactical coordination and organised discipline.

To counter this, players will gain the ability to use the Cryo element to shatter and reshape the battlefield terrain, turning combat into a dynamic interplay between characters, enemies and the environment. The Traveler will also receive special attention; acknowledging their status as a «Descender,» players will unlock brand-new, exclusive gameplay mechanics in a designated special area.

Furthermore, explorers will obtain a new «marvelous gadget» that allows them to reshape parts of the environment and share these modifications with other players.

Visuals, audio and beyond

The musical score for the icy domain will feature a brilliant blend of solemn classical symphonic pieces, modernist compositions and Slavic folk music. Visually, upcoming characters will benefit from significant rendering enhancements for a more premium look, though developers firmly stressed this will not compromise the experience for players on mid-range or low-end devices.

Despite reaching the seventh and final element, the developers firmly stated that Snezhnaya does not mark the absolute end of the game. They promised not to force an inexplicable conclusion nor drag the story out purely for commercial reasons.

Moving forward, the team aims to seamlessly integrate cinematic storytelling into interactive gameplay, standardise dynamic NPC behaviours and ensure the game continues to evolve alongside the modern gaming landscape.
