Flight Chaos Hits Australia and New Zealand as Hundreds Stranded by Delays and Cancellations

Hundreds of passengers were left stranded across Australia and New Zealand after widespread flight disruptions grounded travel plans on Sunday, with dozens of services cancelled and hundreds more delayed.
Airlines including Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia accounted for the majority of cancellations, though delays rippled across the broader aviation network.
Major hubs such as Sydney Airport, Melbourne Airport, Brisbane Airport, Auckland Airport and Wellington Airport were heavily affected.
Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport saw some of the worst disruption, with 84 flights delayed and several cancellations. Sydney, the country’s busiest airport, recorded the highest number of cancellations, alongside dozens of delayed departures.
In New Zealand, Auckland experienced multiple cancellations and delays, particularly impacting long-haul connections, while Wellington saw fewer but still notable disruptions.
Although the immediate cause of the disruption remains unclear, the aviation sector is facing mounting pressure from rising fuel costs linked to ongoing Middle East tensions. Air New Zealand has already warned of reduced services and higher fares in response to surging energy prices.
Passengers have been advised to contact airlines directly regarding rebooking options and potential compensation as travel networks work to recover.
