Austria and Uzbekistan are scheduled to sign a new mobility agreement on May 7 aimed at simplifying deportation procedures.

As reported by The European Conservative the document focuses on strengthening bilateral cooperation to combat illegal migration, human trafficking and migrant smuggling rings. The pact also establishes a framework for joint operations concerning the transit and deportation of expelled individuals to their countries of origin.

Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner emphasised the importance of the treaty. He stated that the mobility agreement with Uzbekistan represents a vital next step in creating the necessary conditions for consistent deportations under a strict and fair asylum policy.

Afghan transit and broader EU strategy

According to intelligence from The European Conservative the deal will notably permit Vienna to return Afghan nationals to their home country by using Uzbekistan as a transit route. This development follows a series of deportations from Austria last year which saw authorities expel several Afghan citizens alongside Syrians following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

In addition to facilitating deportations Tashkent and Vienna intend to deepen their partnership in the realms of border protection and the identification of fraudulent documents.

These measures align with a wider European Union initiative to increase the number of illegal migrants deported to their home nations. The EU push continues despite stark warnings and opposition from various human rights advocates and the UN Refugee Agency.

Prior to this upcoming pact Austrian officials had already enacted several stringent policies to reduce illegal immigration. These recent domestic initiatives include a temporary halt on family reunification processes and the development of enhanced border security mechanisms.
