Prosecutors in California have brought a criminal charge against pop icon Britney Spears following her arrest last month for suspected driving under the influence, BBC reports.

The 44-year-old singer currently faces a single misdemeanour count of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Authorities confirmed that Spears was apprehended on a Southern California motorway on March 4 after police spotted her driving her BMW erratically and at high speed.

On Thursday, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office officially filed the case against the recording artist.

Upcoming court date

Spears is scheduled for a court arraignment next Monday morning. Due to the minor nature of the charge, the singer is not legally obligated to attend the hearing in person.

A spokesperson for the district attorney’s office stated that the choice to appear «will be a decision made between her and her attorney.»

Because the incident did not result in a crash or injury and the singer lacks a history of similar offences, the prosecutor’s office noted that the charge does not typically carry a custodial sentence. Instead, defendants in comparable situations are often permitted to plead guilty to a reduced charge of reckless driving involving alcohol or drugs.

Joey Buttitta from the district attorney’s office confirmed that this plea alternative will be presented to Spears. Standard penalties for this reduced charge generally include a 12-month probation period, mandatory attendance at a driving under the influence educational programme and various financial fines.

Rehabilitation and moving forward

Following her arrest, Britney Spears reportedly admitted herself to a rehabilitation facility.
Her management team condemned the driving incident as «completely inexcusable» while expressing optimism for her recovery. Her representative stated that Spears intends to follow the law and take all necessary correct steps to address the situation.

«Hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,» the representative remarked.

They added that she is focusing on getting essential support during this challenging period and will be spending quality time with her two sons. Her inner circle is reportedly formulating a comprehensive plan to ensure her future well-being and success.

Britney Spears remains one of the most globally successful pop musicians in history. Her extensive catalogue of hits includes chart-toppers such as Baby One More Time, Toxic, Everytime, Gimme More, Womanizer and Stronger.

Her recent legal troubles follow a highly publicised 13-year conservatorship. Until its termination in 2021, the legal arrangement gave her father strict control over her financial estate and personal affairs.
