A fresh release of an oil-containing liquid has been recorded in the Boysun district of Uzbekistan’s Surkhandarya region.

The national Ecology Committee reported that the incident occurred early on the morning of May 2 at approximately 06:30. Preliminary data suggests that a violent mudflow swept through the area and destroyed a containment ditch, which subsequently led to the hazardous mixture leaking into the surrounding environment.

A dedicated task force of employees from the Surkhandarya Regional Main Department of Ecology has been deployed to the affected area. Representatives from other responsible state agencies and local organisations have also been drafted in to help manage the situation and assess the immediate fallout.

The Ecology Committee stated that a thorough examination of the site is currently under way. Officials have promised to release more comprehensive information to the public once the initial safety checks and environmental assessments are concluded.

This latest emergency strikes a community that is already reeling from a recent environmental disaster.

Just over a week ago on April 23, severe rainfall in the Boysun district caused approximately 1.2 tonnes of a similar oil mixture to spill directly into the Khongaronsoy canal. Authorities officially estimated the financial cost of the ecological damage from that previous leak at more than 8.5 bn soums ($711,134).
