Charles Leclerc experienced a miserable conclusion to his Miami Grand Prix weekend after motorsport stewards handed the Ferrari driver a substantial post-race time penalty.

The Monegasque racer faced scrutiny from the officiating panel regarding three separate potential offences that occurred after he spun out on the final lap and clipped the barriers.

Specifically, Leclerc was investigated for piloting a damaged vehicle in an unsafe manner, repeatedly exceeding track limits to gain a lasting advantage and colliding with Mercedes driver George Russell at the final hairpin.

The 20-second demotion

Following a thorough review, the stewards concluded that Leclerc deserved a drive-through penalty. Because the race had already finished, this punishment was translated into a 20-second addition to his overall time. This severe drop ultimately dragged him down to eighth position in the final classification.

Official documents confirmed the sanction was applied because he left the circuit «on several occasions without a justifiable reason».

After consulting with Leclerc, a Ferrari representative, telemetry data, video footage and team radio communications, the panel released their detailed findings. They noted that his car spun at Turn 3 on the last lap and made contact with the wall before rejoining the circuit. Leclerc told officials his vehicle felt mostly fine but was heavily struggling to navigate right-hand turns.

Consequently, the driver felt compelled to cut through the chicanes to reach the chequered flag. However, the stewards determined that bypassing these corners constituted leaving the track and provided him with an unfair advantage. They firmly stated that experiencing a mechanical fault did not give him a valid excuse to bypass the circuit’s layout.

Cleared of additional offences

Regarding the accusation of driving an unsafe car, the panel cleared the Ferrari driver. They concluded there was insufficient evidence to prove the mechanical damage was blatantly obvious or discernible at the time.

Similarly, a separate inquiry into his Turn 17 clash with Russell resulted in no further action. Both drivers agreed the touch was merely a minor racing incident and the stewards concurred.

Verstappen penalised for pit lane breach

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen also found himself slapped with a time penalty for a pit exit infringement on Sunday.

After diving into the pits early during a Safety Car period, Verstappen drove over the solid white line that divides the pit exit from the main straight as he merged back into the pack. Stewards immediately noted the incident but deferred their final verdict until after the race concluded.

Once they reviewed the footage, the panel confirmed the driver’s error and issued a standard five-second time penalty.

This punishment would ordinarily have relegated Verstappen from fifth to sixth place directly behind Leclerc. However, because the Ferrari driver received his own massive 20-second demotion, Verstappen’s track position remained unaffected by the rival team.

The official report explained that initial camera angles were too limited to make a definitive ruling during the actual Grand Prix. Post-race investigations allowed the panel to access alternative views that clearly highlighted the transgression.

Verstappen explained he was exiting the pits under full course yellow conditions, but the fresh angles definitively showed the outside of his front-left tyre breaching the solid white boundary line.
