The first Monday in May has once again turned the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art into a breathtaking gallery space. Celebrating the launch of the newest Costume Institute exhibition, the 2026 Met Gala challenged its illustrious guest list with a delightfully ambitious directive: «Fashion is Art». As anticipated, the world’s most photographed figures fully embraced the concept, blurring the boundaries between traditional tailoring and fine art.

A canvas on the carpet

The carpet itself served as a blank canvas for a spectacular array of bespoke creations. Red carpet host Emma Chamberlain set a vibrant tone early in the evening, stepping out in a mesmerising, multicoloured Mugler design. In stark contrast, Cara Delevingne opted for dark, glittering glamour in a Ralph Lauren ensemble anchored by a dramatic sweeping black train.

Drawing directly from art history, honorary co-chair Lauren Sanchez Bezos commanded attention in a Schiaparelli couture gown that paid homage to John Singer Sargent’s famously controversial painting «Madame X». Meanwhile, Vogue maven Anna Wintour maintained her signature aesthetic, draped in a feathered Chanel cape over an intricately embroidered ombre gown.

The avant-garde spirit of the night was further cemented by striking appearances from guests like Connor Storrie. According to style insiders observing the broader red carpet, the «art» theme prompted a heavy lean into Surrealism and Renaissance aesthetics.

Word from the steps noted that co-chair Beyonce dazzled in a sculptural masterpiece that appeared to be carved directly from marble, while Nicole Kidman thrilled fashion archivists by resurrecting a museum-worthy, mid-century silhouette.

The visionaries in charge

Orchestrating an event of this magnitude requires exceptional star power. Taking the reins as this year’s co-chairs are Beyonce, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour.

Steering the sprawling host committee are Saint Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello and Hollywood actress Zoe Kravitz. They lead a remarkably diverse mix of cultural tastemakers and industry heavyweights. The committee roster includes:

  • Sabrina Carpenter
  • Doja Cat
  • Gwendoline Christie
  • Alex Consani
  • Misty Copeland
  • Elizabeth Debicki
  • Lena Dunham
  • Paloma Elsesser
  • Lisa
  • Chloe Malle (US Vogue’s newly appointed head of editorial content)
  • Sam Smith
  • Teyana Taylor
  • Lauren Wasser
  • Anna Weyant
  • A’ja Wilson
  • Yseult

Inside the «Costume Art» Exhibition

The evening’s immense scale was made possible by lead sponsors Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez Bezos, with vital additional backing from Saint Laurent and Conde Nast. Their support champions not just the gala itself but the sweeping curatorial achievement waiting inside the museum doors.

Masterminded by star curator Andrew Bolton, the «Costume Art» exhibition promises to be a visual feast. The installation interrogates the importance of the dressed body by intentionally placing contemporary and historical garments from the Costume Institute alongside priceless artistic artefacts pulled from the museum’s wider archives.

Fashion enthusiasts eager to witness this sartorial curation can view the exhibition at the Met from May 10, 2026 until January 10, 2027.
