WHO Confirms Deadly Hantavirus Outbreak on Antarctic Cruise Ship
The World Health Organisation has confirmed a deadly hantavirus outbreak aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius, with three passengers dead and several others critically ill.
Two cases have been officially confirmed, with five more suspected among the nearly 150 passengers and crew from 23 countries. Health officials warn the outbreak may involve the Andes strain of the virus, which can spread between humans — raising concerns in the ship’s confined environment.
The vessel, which departed Argentina in April on an Antarctic expedition, has become the centre of an international health response after the first passenger fell ill mid-voyage. Subsequent infections have triggered contact tracing efforts across multiple countries.
The ship is now heading towards the Canary Islands, but its arrival has sparked political tensions. Local authorities have expressed concern about allowing the vessel to dock, while the WHO has urged Spain to permit entry on humanitarian grounds.
Passengers remain isolated in their cabins under strict health measures as investigations continue into the source and spread of the outbreak.
