The international fallout from a deadly hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship is widening after evacuated passengers tested positive upon returning to the United States and France, BBC reports.

With seven confirmed infections and two suspected cases now linked to the vessel, the crisis has triggered a complex global repatriation effort and exposed a sharp divide between international health bodies over how to handle the rare pathogen.

The French health ministry confirmed that a repatriated woman is currently deteriorating in isolation in Paris, prompting authorities to trace 22 of her recent contacts. Across the Atlantic, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced that an American citizen had tested positive while another was displaying mild symptoms. Both individuals were transported using heavily secured biocontainment units.

A clash over quarantine rules

The dispersion of passengers from the ship’s holding position in Tenerife has ignited a prominent dispute between the World Health Organization (WHO) and American health officials.

Because the Andes strain of the hantavirus is capable of human-to-human transmission, the WHO has strongly advised a rigorous 42-day quarantine for anyone disembarking the MV Hondius. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus publicly cautioned that the American decision to ignore these stringent guidelines «may have risks».

Acting U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) head Dr Jay Bhattacharya firmly rejected the WHO’s stance. Seeking to prevent public hysteria, Bhattacharya stressed that the transmission rate remains exceptionally low and argued that the situation does not warrant the same drastic containment measures seen during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Currently, 17 Americans and one UK resident are undergoing medical assessments in Nebraska while seven others are being monitored at home.

The global scatter of passengers

As the diplomatic friction continues, dozens of other passengers have been flown to their respective countries under varying degrees of medical surveillance:

  • United Kingdom: A cohort of 20 asymptomatic British nationals landed in Manchester and were immediately taken to Merseyside’s Arrowe Park Hospital for a brief 72-hour isolation period.
  • Spain: Following their arrival in Madrid, 14 Spanish citizens have been placed under mandatory quarantine at a military hospital.
  • Canada: Four travellers touched down in British Columbia and have been instructed to self-isolate with medical monitoring for a minimum of three weeks.
  • The Netherlands: A flight carrying 26 individuals, including eight Dutch citizens, landed safely on Sunday. An additional group of 22 passengers, including Australians affected by flight delays, are also scheduled to fly to Amsterdam.

Three Fatalities and a Solemn Final Voyage

The MV Hondius originally set sail from the southern Argentine city of Ushuaia on 1 April. The tragedy unfolded rapidly, claiming the life of an elderly Dutch passenger just 10 days into the voyage. His 69-year-old wife later died in South Africa after leaving the ship, followed by the death of a German woman on board in early May. Two other infected British nationals are currently receiving care in the Netherlands and South Africa.

With the passenger evacuation nearing completion, the vessel will soon begin its journey back to the Netherlands operated by a small crew that includes four Ukrainian nationals. In a recent video update, Oceanwide Expeditions Captain Jan Dobrogowski praised the remarkable patience and discipline of everyone on board during what he described as an «extremely challenging» ordeal.

In a further tragic development connected to the crisis, Spanish authorities confirmed that a local police officer suffered a fatal cardiac arrest while managing the tense evacuation logistics at the port of Granadilla.
