Napoli’s push for a guaranteed top-four finish in Serie A took a significant hit on Monday following a late 3-2 home defeat to Bologna, a blow compounded by the unexpected absence of star playmaker Kevin De Bruyne.

The Belgian international was a shock omission from the matchday squad at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Fans were left searching for answers before kick-off when it emerged that De Bruyne was not even named among the substitutes for the crucial penultimate fixture of the season.

Hospital trip and facial stitches

Speaking to DAZN shortly before the match, Napoli head coach Antonio Conte revealed the severe nature of a training ground incident that ruled his midfielder out of contention.

A fierce clash of heads during a recent practice session left the 34-year-old requiring immediate medical attention and a trip to the local hospital. While the medical team fortunately ruled out a serious concussion, the physical damage was deemed too severe to risk him on the pitch.

«De Bruyne had basically a collision in training, a clash of heads, his cheekbone split open, he had four stitches and tests,» Conte explained to reporters. «There is no head trauma but he’s still not in great shape.»

The facial injury comes at a terrible time for the Partenopei. De Bruyne had already missed a substantial chunk of the campaign with a severe thigh issue. His creative absence on Monday was sorely felt as Bologna’s Jonathan Rowe snatched a dramatic 90th-minute victory for the visitors with an acrobatic volley, putting Napoli’s Champions League qualification back in doubt.

The captain returns

Despite the frustration of dropping vital points and losing their midfield talisman, Conte was able to find a silver lining in the return of club captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo. The veteran defender made his first appearance since suffering a severe knee ligament injury against Fiorentina at the end of January.

Conte was eager to highlight the importance of his captain’s presence in a dressing room that is feeling the pressure of a tense top-four race.

«I think Giovanni represents Napoli of this era, he’s been here a long time, is the captain, the only player who have won everything the club won in these years,» the former Chelsea and Inter boss noted. «He’s an important player, a charismatic figure, now after two weeks of training with the team, it was right that he returned as a starter.»

Despite Di Lorenzo’s leadership on the pitch, Napoli must now regroup quickly ahead of the season’s final matchweek to ensure they secure their place in Europe’s elite competition.
