The Memphis Grizzlies have announced the tragic death of their 29-year-old forward Brandon Clarke. The franchise confirmed the news of his passing, though the exact circumstances and cause of death have not yet been made public, BBC reports.

Heartfelt tributes

The Grizzlies organisation released a statement expressing that they are «heartbroken» by the sudden loss of the Canadian-born player. The team praised him for his extensive contributions both on the hardwood and within the local area.

«Brandon was an outstanding team-mate and an even better person whose impact on the organisation and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten,» the statement read.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also paid his respects, highlighting Clarke’s status as one of the longest-serving players on the Memphis roster. Silver remembered him as a beloved colleague, a respected locker-room presence and a competitor who played with immense passion.

Clarke’s representation at Priority Sports echoed these warm sentiments, describing him as deeply loved by everyone he encountered. They stated that he was «the gentlest soul who was the first to be there for all of his friends and family.»

Career journey and recent struggles

Born in Vancouver, Brandon Clarke held dual citizenship in Canada and the United States after moving to Phoenix with his family at the age of three. His journey to the professional leagues saw him shine at the collegiate level playing for San Jose State and Gonzaga.

Key Career Statistics and Milestones:

  • Selected as a first-round draft pick in 2019 by the Oklahoma City Thunder before being immediately traded to Memphis.
  • Made 309 appearances in the NBA.
  • Started in 50 matches for the Grizzlies.
  • Maintained a career average of 10.2 points per game.

Sadly, Clarke’s current season was severely hampered by physical setbacks. Due to ongoing injuries he was limited to just two appearances on the court, both of which took place in December. Despite being unable to play, he remained involved with the squad and travelled to the UK in January for the Grizzlies’ fixture against the Orlando Magic in London.

The tragic news of his death follows a recent off-court incident. Last month, Brandon Clarke was arrested in the state of Arkansas and faced charges for speeding and possession of a controlled substance.
