The escalating legal troubles of a divisive American online broadcaster reached a violent climax this week. Dalton Eatherly, a livestreamer who broadcasts under the moniker «Chud the Builder», was detained following a shooting incident outside a Tennessee courthouse on Wednesday, CNN reports.

The armed clash occurred on the grounds of the Montgomery County Courthouse in Clarksville. According to the Tennessee District Attorney General’s Office, the violent exchange left both Eatherly and an unnamed male with injuries requiring medical treatment. Both individuals are currently stable in hospital.

In a bizarre twist, Dalton Eatherly broadcasted the immediate aftermath of the violence to his followers whilst speaking with emergency responders. During the video, the internet provocateur alleged that he fired his weapon to defend himself from a physical assault.

The reason behind altercation

By his own admission, the altercation was sparked by a verbal dispute during which he hurled a racist phrase at the other man, telling him not to «chimp out». Eatherly claims this offensive remark prompted the man to strike him in the face, which led to a struggle and the discharge of his firearm.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has reassured the local community that the area was immediately secured and the public is no longer at risk. While prosecutors have officially labelled Dalton Eatherly a suspect, specific charges regarding the Clarksville shooting have not yet been announced.

Causing a scene publicly

This latest brush with the law comes hot on the heels of another highly disruptive episode. Just last weekend, the streamer found himself in handcuffs following a chaotic scene at a Nashville dining establishment.

Staff at Bob’s ChopHouse repeatedly asked Eatherly to cease filming his broadcast inside the venue. Instead of complying, police records indicate he caused a massive disturbance, shouted racially charged remarks and ultimately absconded without settling a $371.55 bill.

Officers located the broadcaster the following day. When police attempted to detain him, court documents note that he struggled and tried to pull his arms away. Dalton Eatherly was subsequently booked on charges of theft of services, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. After posting a $5,000 bond, he complained to his online audience that police had seized his mobile phone for investigative purposes.

Detectives in Clarksville are now piecing together the timeline of Wednesday’s gunfire as they continue their investigation.
