Robert Lewandowski confirmed his impending departure from Barcelona when his current contract expires this summer. The 37-year-old forward joined the Catalan giants from Bayern Munich in 2022 and has since enjoyed a highly successful four-year stint in Spain.

Throughout his 191 appearances for the club, the Polish international has netted 119 goals. His formidable strike rate helped guide Barca to three La Liga titles as well as the Copa del Rey in 2025.

Mission accomplished in Catalonia

Taking to Instagram to announce his decision to the fans, Lewandowski expressed immense pride in his achievements.

«After four years full of challenges and hard work, it’s time to move on,» he wrote. «I leave with the feeling that the mission is complete. Four seasons, three championships.»

He went on to praise the club and the region, adding:

«Barca is back where it belongs. I will never forget the love I received from the fans from my very first days. Catalonia is my place on earth.»

Despite battling numerous injury setbacks over the past year which restricted him to just 15 league starts this season, Lewandowski remained a crucial figure in the dressing room. He made a late cameo during last weekend’s Clasico victory against Real Madrid that officially secured the league title for Barcelona. Furthermore, his crucial strike in a 2-1 win over Osasuna earlier this month was pivotal in setting up their triumphant title run-in.

Regarding his next destination, speculation is already mounting. Major League Soccer franchise Chicago Fire confirmed last December that they had held preliminary discussions with the veteran striker about a potential move to the United States.

A fond farewell

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, who previously managed the forward during a dominant era at Bayern Munich, confirmed Lewandowski will start his final home match at the Spotify Camp Nou against Real Betis this Sunday. The team will then conclude their domestic campaign away at Valencia the following Saturday.

Flick spoke warmly of his long-time player ahead of the weekend fixture.

«He spoke with the team, said goodbye and that it was a great time for him here in Barcelona,» the German coach revealed.

Highlighting the nine trophies they have won together across their respective careers, Flick praised Lewandowski’s enduring quality and work ethic.

«For me it’s a privilege to work with him. He’s a professional player. Every day he gave the best with his body to be at the highest level,» Flick noted, calling him a consummate professional, a world-class talent and a perfect role model for younger players.

The football club also released a touching official statement to honour the departing striker, highlighting his immense impact:

«Thank you, Robert Lewandowski, for every goal, every bit of fight and every magical moment wearing these colours. He arrived as a star, he leaves as a legend.»
