Max Verstappen received a timely advantage in his bid to conquer the Nurburgring 24 Hours. His team will launch their campaign from fourth on the grid, sitting directly behind the #84 and #130 Lamborghinis that have successfully locked out the front row, RN365 reports.

Levelling the playing field

To ensure fair competition across diverse manufacturers in endurance motorsport, officials utilise a strict Balance of Performance (BoP) system. This mechanism essentially aims to equalise the overall pace of the grid by adding weight or restricting engine power for the fastest vehicles.

Following the conclusion of Top Qualifying, race organisers have opted to implement several crucial adjustments that heavily impact the sharp end of the pack. Both Porsche and Lamborghini have been handed a five-kilogram weight penalty, while BMW has been slapped with a much heftier 10-kilogram increase.

This heavy penalty applied to BMW is particularly significant given that the German marquee is the defending champion and boasts a formidable driver lineup that includes Kelvin van der Linde.

Power restrictions favour Mercedes

In addition to weight modifications, race officials have also targeted engine output. Lamborghini has suffered the most severe power reduction of the field, with its engine restrictor narrowed by half a millimetre to artificially curb its top speed. Ford has also been hampered, seeing the second component of its twin-restrictor setup reduced by a full millimetre.

Crucially for Verstappen, his Mercedes team has completely escaped this latest round of BoP adjustments. While the Mercedes-AMG GT3 remains one of the heaviest contenders in the premier SP9 class with a mandated base weight of 1,355 kilograms, the recent penalties applied to rival cars have drastically closed the performance gap.

With BMW pushed up to 1,350 kilograms and Lamborghini increased to 1,335 kilograms, this relative shift in vehicle dynamics could provide the Dutchman’s squad with a decisive edge as they prepare for a gruelling day and night of racing.
