The 70th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest concluded in Vienna amid unprecedented political controversy and boycotts linked to Israel’s participation in the competition. Despite tensions surrounding the event, Bulgaria secured its first-ever Eurovision victory.
Singer Dara won the contest with the upbeat anthem «Bangaranga,» earning 516 points in the grand final.
Israel’s representative Noam Bettan finished second with the song «Michelle,» despite protests and criticism surrounding the country’s inclusion in the show.
The contest, hosted in Vienna after Austria’s 2025 victory, became one of the most politically divisive in Eurovision history. Spain, Ireland, Slovenia, Iceland and the Netherlands either withdrew from participation or refused to broadcast the show, accusing organisers of double standards over Israel’s involvement during the Gaza conflict.

Organisers from the European Broadcasting Union insisted Eurovision should remain politically neutral. However, demonstrations took place across Vienna throughout the week, while Israel’s delegation reportedly received a formal warning over promotional voting campaigns encouraging viewers to cast maximum votes.
This year’s competition also carried added symbolism for Austria. The country hosted Eurovision after singer JJ won the 2025 contest with «Wasted Love.» Before the event, JJ publicly stated he hoped Eurovision 2026 would take place «without Israel,» adding further controversy to the buildup.
