A moderately strong earthquake measuring 5.2 in magnitude has struck the southwestern Chinese region of Guangxi. The seismic event hit the industrial city of Liuzhou during the early hours of Monday morning, leaving two people dead and triggering a mass evacuation across the local area.

Casualties and structural damage

State media outlets including CCTV and Xinhua have confirmed the two fatalities and noted that rescue personnel are still actively searching for one missing individual. Four people were rushed to hospital for medical treatment following the tremors but officials have stated that their injuries are thankfully not life-threatening.

The early morning quake proved powerful enough to bring down 13 buildings across the affected zone. While a 5.2 magnitude event is generally considered moderate, it can be particularly destructive to older masonry or rural structures that lack modern seismic reinforcements. Search and rescue operations are currently combing through the rubble to ensure no one else is trapped.

Mass evacuations and transport delays

Emergency response teams have already evacuated more than 7,000 residents from Liuzhou and its surrounding districts to ensure their ongoing safety.

While the city’s essential utilities seem to have weathered the disaster unscathed, travel networks face severe delays. Railway authorities have cautioned passengers to expect significant transport disruptions in the coming days.

Engineers are currently conducting thorough safety inspections along the regional rail infrastructure to check for any structural warping or track damage before authorising the resumption of regular train services.

Despite the widespread evacuations, state media reported that the municipal services are operating normally.

Although the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region experiences less frequent and severe seismic activity than neighbouring provinces such as Yunnan and Sichuan, the area’s mountainous terrain means it remains vulnerable to sudden tremors.
