The football world is bracing for a massive managerial reunion as Jose Mourinho prepares to return to Real Madrid. According to renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, the much-anticipated move is officially happening with all terms now verbally agreed between the two parties.

Romano revealed that Mourinho will sign an initial two-year contract and is scheduled to travel to the Spanish capital to formalise the paperwork following Real Madrid’s upcoming match against Athletic Bilbao.

Restoring order at the Bernabeu

The 63-year-old tactician will arrive to replace interim boss Alvaro Arbeloa. Arbeloa took the reins in January 2026 following the abrupt departure of Xabi Alonso but has struggled to stabilise a turbulent dressing room over the past few months.

Club president Florentino Perez reportedly identified Mourinho as the perfect authoritative figure to restore discipline amongst a squad dealing with behind-the-scenes friction involving major star players.

To facilitate the move, Real Madrid are expected to trigger a release clause to pry Jose Mourinho away from Benfica. The Portuguese manager took charge of the Lisbon outfit last year and recently concluded his domestic campaign by beating Estoril to secure a third-place finish in Liga Portugal. Reports suggest he will be bringing several of his trusted coaching staff with him from Benfica to Spain.

A legacy of trophies and drama

This blockbuster appointment marks Mourinho’s second tenure at the Santiago Bernabeu, coming exactly 13 years after his initial exit. During his first spell from 2010 to 2013, he fiercely challenged Pep Guardiola‘s iconic Barcelona side.

His crowning achievement in Spain was leading Real Madrid to the 2011-12 La Liga title with a record-breaking 100 points and 121 goals. He also secured a Copa del Rey and a Spanish Super Cup during a highly charged but successful era.

Widely known as «The Special One», Mourinho boasts one of the most decorated resumes in managerial history. He first shot to global prominence by guiding Porto to an unlikely Champions League triumph in 2004 before moving to the Premier League to win back-to-back titles with Chelsea. He later orchestrated a historic treble with Inter Milan in 2010 which included his second Champions League trophy.

In the years since his first Madrid exit, he has managed several major European clubs including Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Roma and Fenerbahce.
