The Tashkent Metro is preparing to introduce a completely revamped payment system designed to modernise how passengers pay for their daily commutes, according to a presidential resolution.

The upcoming ticketing overhaul will abandon the traditional flat-rate fare in favour of a more dynamic approach. The newly approved framework outlines three mandatory principles that will govern the upgraded system:

  • Distance-based pricing: Commuters will soon be charged according to the exact distance they travel or the specific number of stations they pass through during their journey.
  • Targeted social benefits: The state will introduce specific concessions and fare reductions tailored to support certain demographic groups within the population.
  • Flexible subscription models: To enhance overall passenger convenience, the transport network will roll out a variety of ticketing options including daily, weekly and monthly passes.

To ensure the project aligns with successful international practices, a dedicated task force has been assembled. The Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Tashkent Metro JSC and the Tashkent City Municipality are jointly responsible for developing comprehensive proposals for the new payment architecture.

These authorities have been given a six-month deadline to finalise their strategies and submit them to the Cabinet of Ministers following approval from the Tashkent Metro JSC supervisory board. If the development phase proceeds as scheduled, city residents can expect the brand-new payment system to officially launch on January 1, 2027.

Currently, the fare is 1,700 UZS ($0.14)
