Thomas Tuchel has confirmed his 26-man England squad for this summer’s World Cup across Canada, Mexico and the United States. In a selection that has stunned fans and pundits alike, the German manager has issued a shock recall to Ivan Toney while firmly shutting the door on established names such as Harry Maguire, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden.

Charged with leading the Three Lions to global glory, Tuchel contacted players throughout the week before officially confirming his travelling party on Friday morning. Going against the public mood, he has shown a ruthless streak that prioritises tactical trust over past reputations.

Attacking surprises and high-profile casualties

The decision to bring Toney in from the international wilderness is perhaps the manager’s most striking move. The Al-Ahli striker has not featured for his country since June 2025 but a remarkable return of 42 goals in the Saudi Pro League has earned him a ticket to North America. He joins Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins as backup for captain Harry Kane.

Consequently, the attacking midfield roles have been handed to Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze. This leaves no room for Chelsea’s Cole Palmer or Manchester City’s Phil Foden following underwhelming domestic campaigns. Palmer has battled with form and fitness, with Tuchel reportedly harbouring concerns over whether the 24-year-old possesses the right temperament for a gruelling seven-week tournament camp.

Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon will battle for the left-wing spot, while Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke were favoured on the right over West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen.

Defensive overhaul and Maguire’s dismay

The defence has seen equally dramatic omissions. Real Madrid right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has been completely exiled, with Tuchel going on the record to state he does not trust him defensively. Instead, Tottenham’s Djed Spence takes a full-back spot despite an inconsistent club season and a recently broken jaw sustained following a foul by Chelsea’s Liam Delap.

Harry Maguire’s omission has also made major headlines. The 66-cap Manchester United centre-back expressed his deep disappointment on Thursday evening, stating he was «shocked and gutted» by the decision. His exclusion leaves John Stones, Dan Burn, Ezri Konsa, Marc Guéhi and Jarell Quansah as Tuchel’s central defensive options.

The manager’s verdict

Speaking on his controversial selection, Tuchel emphasised the importance of squad harmony, current form and absolute trust.

«It’s hard to please everyone. I think in the end we have to pick a squad we love and really believe. If there are doubts you don’t play on the same level. Who delivered for us, who delivered a culture from September onwards, who set the standards, who were the drivers? The connections have to be there. It is about energy and connection and trust.»

Addressing the high-profile absences, Tuchel acknowledged the difficulty of the conversations but stood by his data and observations.

«In the phone calls I felt the emotion,» he admitted. «In the end we went back to the evidence we had.»
