Hot on the heels of the Sunday night finale of HBO’s hit series Euphoria, Sydney Sweeney is actively expanding her footprint behind the camera. The actress has officially launched her own production company, Honey Trap, bringing on her long-time creative collaborator Kaylee McGregor to serve as president of production and development, Deadline reports.

The newly formed banner is already making waves having secured a lucrative first-look agreement with Sony Pictures.

A winning formula at Sony

This new partnership is a natural progression following Sweeney’s massive success at the studio with the sleeper hit Anyone But You. Serving as both star and executive producer, she was a driving force behind the romantic comedy. She collaborated closely with director Will Gluck and enlisted Glen Powell to co-star in a film that shocked the industry by grossing over $210 mln worldwide.

Her ambitions do not stop at producing. Industry insiders suggest that Sweeney is eyeing the director’s chair, a milestone that could very well materialise at Sony in the near future.

Currently, she is attached to two major projects under the Sony umbrella:

Barbarella: A remake of the 1968 cult classic at TriStar Pictures. Edgar Wright is attached to direct with a script by Jane Goldman and Honey Ross.

The Registration: An adaptation of the Madison Lawson novel which Sweeney is set to produce.

Box office triumphs and future sequels

Beyond her burgeoning relationship with Sony, Sweeney is enjoying tremendous commercial success. She recently starred opposite Amanda Seyfried in Lionsgate’s adaptation of the bestselling novel The Housemaid. Directed by Paul Feig, the thriller became a box office juggernaut and grossed nearly $400 mln globally.

Sweeney is already preparing to reprise her role in the highly anticipated sequel The Housemaid’s Secret, which will see her star alongside Kirsten Dunst when filming commences this autumn.

Transitioning from television to film

While double Emmy-nominated roles in Euphoria and The White Lotus initially catapulted her to global fame, Sweeney is now firmly focusing her talents on the cinematic space. Her upcoming slate is packed with high-profile feature films:

  • A Warner Bros vehicle based on the Reddit story and subsequent book I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl, penned by Oscar-winning writer Eric Roth.
  • StudioCanal’s adaptation of Edith Wharton‘s Custom of the Country opposite Leo Woodall.
  • Legendary and Netflix’s Gundam, which is currently shooting in Australia under the direction of Jim Mickle.

Critical acclaim and industry respect

While Sweeney frequently commands attention for her public presence, her recent American Eagle campaign famously caused the brand’s shares to spike, the creation of Honey Trap proves there is serious substance behind her Hollywood trajectory.

She has steadily gained the respect of critics and industry peers alike with dramatic, challenging roles. Her performance as NSA whistleblower Reality Winner in the HBO-acquired indie *Reality* drew widespread praise following its Berlin premiere.

Furthermore, she proved her producing mettle on the David Michod biographical drama Christy. When the project previously stalled, Sweeney stepped in to help piece it back together with Black Bear Pictures financing, ultimately delivering a powerhouse performance as fighter Christy Martin.
