James Handy, a prolific character actor whose four-decade career included roles in Top Gun: Maverick and Jumanji, has been killed in a brutal stabbing outside his Los Angeles home. He was 81.

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that the incident occurred in the Tarzana neighbourhood on the morning of June 3, 2026. The suspected attacker is 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, the son of Handy’s current partner who also lived at the Erwin Street property.

Authorities from the Robbery-Homicide Division’s Valley Bureau Section are currently spearheading the investigation. According to an official press release, officers were dispatched around 9:30 a.m. after receiving a chilling 911 call. The caller allegedly confessed to emergency dispatchers with the cryptic message:

«I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.»

When patrol units arrived at the scene, they discovered Handy unconscious in the front garden with a severe stab wound to his chest. Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

In a bizarre turn of events, Gledhill actively flagged down the responding officers outside the property to identify himself as the perpetrator. He was promptly arrested and taken to Van Nuys Jail under booking number 7251867. He currently faces a murder charge with bail set at $2 mln.

While detectives Simonyan and Lopez work to establish a concrete motive, they have reassured local residents that this appears to be an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the wider public. Crime scene photographs have circulated showing discarded items of clothing left outside the suburban home and investigators are appealing to anyone with relevant information to contact LA Regional Crime Stoppers.

Lasting legacy

Born in New York, Handy boasted an extensive filmography of nearly 150 screen credits. He made his feature film debut in the 1977 drama Taps before securing memorable supporting parts in beloved films such as Arachnophobia, The Rocketeer and Logan. Pop culture fans will fondly remember him as the exterminator in the 1995 fantasy classic Jumanji and as the bartender Jimmy in the 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick.

His presence on the small screen was equally vast. Beyond his recurring appearances as Arthur Devlin in Alias, Handy graced a multitude of hit television programmes throughout the 1990s and 2000s. His notable TV guest credits spanned network crime dramas and hit sitcoms alike, including appearances on Seinfeld, Beverly Hills 90210, ER, The West Wing, The X-Files and NYPD Blue.
