The Iranian national football team has been granted visas to enter the United States ahead of the World Cup tournament kicking off next week, U.S. officials have confirmed, BBC reports.

The clearance comes a mere 10 days before Iran’s opening fixture against New Zealand, which is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles on June 15.

In an official statement, authorities confirmed that the visas required for Iran to compete in the tournament, covering both the athletes and vital backroom staff, had been successfully issued. However, officials explicitly noted that the U.S. would remain vigilant, stating they would not allow the Iranian delegation to abuse the system to sneak terrorists into the country under false pretences.

At present, the Iranian football federation has not released a public statement regarding the updates.

A historic and tense tournament

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico, is set to begin on June 11. The inclusion of the Iranian squad marks a historic anomaly for the competition, representing the first time a host nation will welcome a sporting team from a country with which it is actively at war.

The build-up to the tournament has been plagued by logistical friction. In late May, Iran was forced to relocate its training camp to Mexico from Tucson, Arizona. Mehdi Taj, the president of Iran’s football federation, attributed the sudden move to ongoing visa complications. The situation appeared precarious as recently as Friday, with the Fars news agency reporting that several members of Iran’s technical and administrative staff were still waiting for their entry documents to be processed.

Political scrutiny and military links

The visa approvals follow strict warnings from Washington regarding the composition of the travelling party. Earlier this week, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed lawmakers that no individuals with ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a powerful branch of the Iranian armed forces, would be permitted entry.

This directive created an intricate hurdle for the squad, as several players within the Iranian national pool have previously completed their mandatory national military service within the ranks of the IRGC. Despite these political complications, the full squad has now been cleared to travel for their world stage appearances.
