Uzbekistan lost 2-1 to the Netherlands in an international friendly in New York. Fabio Cannavaro’s team equalised in the 92nd minute through Igor Sergeev but conceded a late penalty to lose the match.

The Netherlands controlled possession early in the game and created several chances against goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov. In the 30th minute, the referee awarded a penalty after Jakhongir Urozov fouled Crysencio Summerville. Cody Gakpo took the penalty and scored to give the Netherlands the lead.

Following the goal, Uzbekistan increased their attacking efforts through Abbosbek Fayzullaev and Eldor Shomurodov but entered half-time trailing 1-0.

Second half and red card

Uzbekistan played more offensively in the second half following the substitutions of Dostonbek Khamdamov, Igor Sergeev and Jamshid Iskanderov.

In the 87th minute, a VAR review resulted in a straight red card for Dutch midfielder Guus Til. He was dismissed for a handball outside the penalty area that denied a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Utilising the numerical advantage, Uzbekistan levelled the score at 1-1 in the 92nd minute when Sergeev capitalised on a defensive error to score.

However, deep into added time, another VAR intervention led to a second penalty for the Netherlands. Gakpo converted the spot-kick to secure a final 2-1 win for the Dutch team.
