New York City’s most famous landmarks, from the Empire State Building to One World Trade Center, were illuminated in orange and blue to celebrate the Knicks’ highly anticipated first home game of the series. However, the electric atmosphere was complicated by exorbitant ticket costs, recent street chaos and a high-profile visit from Donald Trump, BBC reports.

Securing a seat for the milestone match proved impossible for the average supporter. Online resale markets saw the cheapest available tickets soar past $10,000 (£7,500), with premium spots demanding upwards of $100,000. While regular-season Knicks fixtures are traditionally among the NBA’s most expensive, these series prices reached unprecedented heights.

Even local politicians felt the financial strain. Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed to journalists that he spent nearly $1,000 for his entry to the arena.

When asked on Friday about the staggering costs pricing out everyday supporters, Donald Trump offered a blunt assessment.

«That’s the way life goes,» he remarked. «It’s sort of semi-free to watch it on television.»

A high-profile distraction

Trump’s unexpected decision to attend the game drew mixed reactions from the fanbase. One supporter noted that the heavy security and media circus surrounding the visit impacted local gatherings.

«I think it really put a damper on all the watch parties,» the fan observed. «But it’s pretty cool he wants to show up and be a part of it.»

The intense demand to be part of the action follows days of unruly celebrations across the city. During the team’s previous two matches, which were played away in Texas, massive crowds of supporters dressed in Knicks gear flooded the streets surrounding the New York arena.

The rowdy gatherings quickly escalated into public order offences. Local authorities made dozens of arrests as overzealous fans climbed lampposts, jumped onto food carts and blocked city traffic.
