Severe anti-immigration riots have swept through Belfast, resulting in widespread property damage and the deployment of armoured police units. The violent street protests erupted on Tuesday in direct response to a horrific stabbing in the north of the city that left a man fighting for his life, Reuters reports.

Tensions boiled over when groups of masked youths began gathering at various flashpoints across the Northern Irish capital. The demonstrations rapidly deteriorated into aggressive rioting, with crowds targeting local infrastructure and residential properties.

In east Belfast, rioters set a public bus on fire and initiated a campaign of vandalism. Media outlets broadcast scenes of a residential building ablaze, while reports confirmed that a mob of approximately 100 men systematically smashed windows and kicked down doors along a local street.

The unrest also triggered a smaller solidarity demonstration in London, where a few dozen demonstrators temporarily obstructed traffic in Parliament Square.

The catalyst

The spark for Tuesday’s riots was a severe knife attack that took place late Monday evening. A man in his 40s was subjected to what authorities described as a brutal assault with a kitchen knife, sustaining critical injuries to his eyes as well as deep lacerations across his face and back.

Police commanders have publicly praised the bravery of several bystanders who physically intervened to stop the attacker, stating their actions undoubtedly saved the victim’s life.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reacted to widely circulated footage of the stabbing by branding the incident as «sickening».

Suspect profile

On Tuesday evening authorities formally charged a 30-year-old Sudanese national with attempted murder, making threats to kill and possessing a bladed article. He is scheduled to face a judge at Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Providing background on the suspect, police confirmed he is a local resident who was officially granted leave to remain in the UK in September 2023. His journey to the country involved flying from Paris to Dublin before taking a bus across the border into Belfast in February of that year.

Chief Constable Jon Boutcher sought to dispel online rumours regarding the man’s history, stating clearly that the suspect was entirely unknown to the Police Service of Northern Ireland and did not appear on any national security watchlists.

A «critical incident» amid national tensions

The police have officially designated the situation as a «critical incident» but stress that the initial stabbing is not currently being treated as an act of terrorism.

Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson acknowledged the community’s profound shock but issued a desperate plea for order.

«I understand that last night’s attempted murder will leave people feeling a range of emotions, from fear to anger,» he said. «I appeal for calm and the safety of all of our communities in response to this.»

Political leaders across Northern Ireland’s deeply divided spectrum issued a unified statement condemning both the initial horrific attack and the subsequent riots, warning that street violence serves only to fracture their neighbourhoods.

These events arrive at a highly volatile moment for the UK. Public debate over border control has reached boiling point, fuelled by populist rhetoric and recent high-profile crimes—including a recent murder by a Sikh man who fabricated a racist motive. Northern Ireland itself is no stranger to this specific brand of unrest, having experienced similar anti-immigrant rioting last year following rumours of a sexual assault.
