Thai Royal Family Announces Death of Princess Bajrakitiyabha Aged 47

The Thai monarchy has confirmed the passing of Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavati. The eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn succumbed to severe health complications on Thursday evening at the age of 47.
Her death brings a deeply sorrowful end to a medical crisis that left the royal in a coma for nearly four years.
Known warmly across the nation as Princess Pa, she initially collapsed in December 2022. While carrying out duties in the northeastern Nakhon Ratchasima province she suffered a sudden loss of consciousness linked to a severe cardiac issue. Following an emergency helicopter transfer to a specialist facility in Bangkok, she remained under constant intensive care.
A palace bulletin revealed that her condition fatally deteriorated this week due to an array of secondary issues encompassing an intra-abdominal infection, colitis, erratic blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmias and blood clotting abnormalities.
A legacy of law and advocacy
Born on December 7, 1978 to the King and his first wife Princess Soamsawali, Bajrakitiyabha carved out an identity defined by rigorous public service rather than mere aristocratic privilege. As one of only three royal offspring holding formal titles she possessed constitutional eligibility to inherit the Thai throne.
Her academic and professional credentials were extraordinary. After securing a Master’s and a Doctorate in law from the prestigious Cornell University in the United States, she pursued a distinguished legal and diplomatic trajectory.
Professional Milestones:
- Legal Counsel: She served as a prominent attorney within the Thai Office of the Attorney-General between 2006 and 2011 before returning to the department later in her career.
- International Diplomacy: She acted as Thailand’s official envoy to Austria, Slovakia and Slovenia from 2012 to 2014.
- Military Leadership: She transferred to the armed forces in 2021 where she achieved the rank of general and operated as chief of staff for the Royal Security Command.
Beyond her governmental roles the princess was a fierce advocate for penal reform. She established a charitable foundation dedicated to uplifting female inmates, placing a particular emphasis on the wellbeing and rights of pregnant prisoners. The United Nations recognised these tireless efforts in 2017 by appointing her as a goodwill ambassador for the rule of law across Southeast Asia.
Consecutive royal tragedies
The passing of Princess Pa compounds the grief of the royal household following the death of Thailand’s 93-year-old Queen Mother last October.
Traditional royal funeral ceremonies are currently being arranged by the palace while authorities in Bangkok are widely anticipated to announce an official period of national mourning to allow the public to pay their final respects.
