Undisputed heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk met with United States President Donald Trump inside the Oval Office on Saturday June 13.

The high-profile encounter was confirmed by Margo Martin, the special assistant to the U.S. president and communications adviser. Sharing a photograph of the pair shaking hands on social media, Martin wrote:

The mystery of championship belt

This weekend’s meeting adds an intriguing layer to the existing relationship between the Ukrainian athlete and the American leader. In February 2025 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky presented Trump with one of Usyk’s championship belts during a diplomatic visit to Washington.

The precise meaning behind the gift and its current whereabouts remain a closely guarded secret. Both politicians offered cryptic responses when questioned about the item at the time, while the boxer merely remarked that he knew exactly what the belt was but could not reveal anything to anyone.

A history of direct appeals

Before securing this face-to-face meeting, Usyk had spent months using his vast global platform to directly challenge Trump’s perspective on the Russian invasion.

In April 2025 the athlete publicly implored the president to open his eyes to the harsh realities of the war, outright dismissing some of Trump’s previous comments on the conflict as complete nonsense. He followed this up in June of the same year by extending a personal invitation to the American leader. Usyk challenged Trump to visit Ukraine to witness the destruction firsthand, issuing a stark reminder that deadly missiles and drones fly over his family home every single night.

Growing global influence

Beyond his phenomenal success in the boxing ring, Usyk continues to command immense respect as an international ambassador.

A leading magazine recently recognised his broader cultural impact by naming the Ukrainian fighter as one of the most influential people in the world. This prestigious accolade placed him alongside elite global sporting icons such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and top NBA stars.
